Lord Shaftesbury and Dr. Barnardo

This week in History, we have been learning about people who went about changing the atrocious conditions which children were working in  during the Victorian era. Both Lord Shaftesbury and Dr. Barnardo vowed to help and support poor children especially those trapped in the workhouses.

Your homework this week is to pick one of these influential figures and write a short explanation as to why they were crucial in changing working conditions for children during the Victorian era.

Remember to check your spellings, grammar and punctuation.

I look forward to reading your work.

Dr.Barnardo was very important because he helped lots of poor children. He helped them by giving them a place to live so they don’t die. He made one place for boys to live and one place for girls to live. One day a boy by the name of John Somers died 2 days after the boys home was full. After that sighting, Dr.Barnardo did not let any boys or girls die and let them stay at the home even if they ran out of space. He got the idea thanks to a boy called Jim Jarvis that showed him around the East End and the places where the poor children live.(The boys home name was called Stepney Causeway and the girls home was called Girls Village.)

  6. Ahmed Nadeem says:

Dr Barnardo was born in Dublin 1845. When he was 16, he wanted to become a protestant medical missionary in china.
He moved to London to train to be a doctor. He was interested in the lives of poor people, so for boys he made an house/school for them in Stepheney Causeway. One day a boy Jim Jarvis showed him boys living in sewages and he was shocked and
devastated. He also opened a school for girls where they learnt how to sew and become maids for ladies.

Dr. Barnardo helped poor Victorian children by making a school for them were they can have an education and a home. He even opened a school for girls. Like the boys, they had a right to an education there to.One day a child called Jim Jarvis took Barnardo to the East End showing him children sleeping under gutters.Looking at the children made him think that he should take them in and give them an education. That’s when he opened the school. One day he turned away a boy called John Somers because the school was already full. Two-days later he was found dead by malnutrition. From that day on they never turned away another child.

Dr barnardo was born in 1845in Dublin,Ireland and at the age of 21 he decided to become a doctor in China so he studied in London. Whilst he was in London he saw the children starving and many of them wore working in bad conditions so he stayed to help them. He started teaching poor children in a donkey’s stable in 1866 then he opened his own free school .Then in 1870 he made a Sheltor for 50 boys where he gave them a place to live.In 1876 he made a girl’s village and built 14 cottages where 250 girls lived after that he arranged for poor children to live with proper families.

Dr Barnardo was in charge of the changing the children life in the Victorian era.He wanted to save children by raising some money and build school for them.Barnardo did this so children would not die.In 1870, he opened up a school for boys which provided food water and shelter and in 1876 he opened a school for girls.Dr Barnardo, died in the year 1900.

  12. Mariam says:

Dr Bernardo was a man who wanted to change the lives of the children in the Victorian era. The reason why he wanted to do that is because the children were getting whipped and may have had their fingers chopped off! He decided to help them by raising some money and using that to build them houses and schools.

One day, While he was walking on the street, he stopped and met a boy called Jim Jarvis. He showed him the way to the East Cliff and when they got there he was shocked. There children were sleeping in gutters.

In 1870, he opened a boys school. In 1876, he opened a girls school and with the help of the children, it became successful. Unfortunately, in 1900 Dr Bernardo died.

  15. Aneesa says:

Thomas John Barnardo was born on 4th July 1845. Thomasdied unfortunately on the 19th September 1905. (He had lived for 60 years) Thomas Barnardo was born in Dublin, Ireland.

When Thomas was sixteen years old, he had decided that he wanted to become a Protestant medical missionary in China. This then meant that he had to study in London to become a doctor. He studied at the London Hospital, but never actually completed the course to earn a degree. Although he is known as ‘Doctor’ Barnardo, he never was actually qualified as a doctor.

Thomas Barnardo became interested in the lives of the poor children in Victorian London . One of his pupils, a boy called Jim Jarvis, took Barnardo on a walk of the East End, showing him the number of poor children sleeping on floors. Barnardo was so moved by the sight that he knew that if none was going to do anything about this he had to do something himself. In 1870, Barnardo opened a school for boys in Stepaney Causeway. He provided shelter for orphans and destitute children. This was the first time he opened a ‘ragged school’ in 1867.
