    Lord Ashley didn’t have a very happy childhood.
    He was born on 28th April 1801 in London.
    Until his father’s death in 1851, he was known as lord Ashley.
    He was a pupil at Harrow school and then he studied classic Christ church collage, Oxford.
    He was important of the British history because he president of ragged schools which meant that poor kids could get an education.

    Lord Shaftsbury was born on the 28th April 1801 at 24 Grosvenor Square. He was born in London. When his father died in 1851 Lord Shaftsbury was known as Lord Ashley. He didn’t have a happy childhood and he never saw his parents at all. He had an unpleasant time at the Manor House school in chiswick. The only person he would get on with was the housekeeper Maria Mills. She would read him a book to cheer him up because he had a very hard life.

    Lord Shaftsbury was a pupil at Harrow school and then he studied classics at the Christ Church collage, Oxford. In 1826, Shaftsbury became a Tory member of the house of Parliament. He was the supporter of the Duke Wellington. He was the president of ragged union, promoting the education of poor children.

    He died at the age of 84 years old on 1st October 1885.He was buried in Westminster abbey.

    Lord Shaftesbury was a politician who wanted to reform children’s lives during the Victorian era. He was born in 1801, 28th of April. His father, Anthony Ashley cooper, was the 6th Earl of Shaftesbury. Lord Shaftesbury then became Earl of Shaftesbury…actually he was the 7th earl of Shaftesbury.

    When he was 25, he also became a member of parliament. In 1833 he proposed that children should work for a maximum of 10 hours. In 1837 it was made law that if they were under 9 they were not allowed working in factories. It was then made law that women or children were not allowed to work underground.

    He was also interested in education for working children. He was chairman of the Ragged Schools Union – an organisation that set up over a hundred schools for poor children.

Until his Father’s death he was known as Lord Ashley, he didn’t have a pleasant childhood as he didn’t see his parents that often. In 1826, he became a tory member of parliament (he was a supporter of the Duke of Wellington). Shaftesbury was heavily involved in reforming lunatic asylums (somebody who was in charge of people who are mentally ill). He provided better care for children by looking after them and giving them enough food to eat and drink.
    Shaftesbury was the president of the Ragged School Union, promoting the education of poor children. In 1833, he proposed that children should work at the maximum of 10 hours. In 1834, a law was passed that children under 9 would not work in textile factories. Along with that, in 1842, he also made a law saying no child or women should work underground.
    In 1885, on the 1st October he died in Westminster Abbey (he was 84 years old when he died).

    He took plight of poor children after reading reports about the labour industry. An organisation was funded for ragged schools for children. Also, he was responsible for reforming British factories.

    Lord Shaftesbury was the 7th earl of Shaftesbury. He was born on the 28th April 1801. When his father died, everyone called him Lord Ashley. He hardly saw his parents and he had an unhappy early life.

    In 1826, Lord Shaftesbury became a tory member of Parliament. He supported Duke of Wellington’s campaign. He also soon became interested for a medical asylum for the insane. He was also a man who decided how long children work in the factories, as he was similar to Dr Bernardo. He was the president of the ragged school union, he liked to help children. In 1842 he said all children under 10 were not allowed to work in mines or to work more than 10 hours.

    Lord Shaftesbury had ten children. He died on the 1st of October 1885. All the children were extremely upset. The reason why he was so upset was that he helped millions of the children and build medical Asylum’s for the insane.

    Because of him, women and children are not allowed to work in mines anymore.

    Lord Shaftesbury was part of the Anthony Ashley Cooper family. He was the president of the Ragged School Union; he made sure every child was educated and well looked after. Lord Shaftesbury wanted to help people who were poor and since he was rich. He provided food, drinks, blankets and clothes for them. He didn’t just sit around and let the others deal with it because he was selfless and wanted the poor to live a better life.
